Business Resource & Efficiency Programme (BREW)

“The BREW Programme

The development of this programme, which started in April 2005, ensures that the additional Landfill Tax will not only incentivise businesses to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill, but will also assist them in developing ways to achieve this. This will mostly be through developing and expanding existing programmes that have already proven successful.

Nationally we are generating some 400m tonnes of waste each year and this is growing by 3% each year. Industrial and commercial waste accounts for around 20% of total waste and over half of this goes to landfill. Neither landfilling nor incineration provide sustainable long term solutions for dealing with the level of waste on this scale. Government introduced the Landfill Tax to stimulate reductions in the levels of business waste.”

At Weatherology we believe that much waste is caused by the difference between what a consumer desires and what is produced. Understanding of consumer desire is the key factor in being able to forecast what a consumer wants and over production of what a consumer doesn’t want (waste).

Investigation conducted by Weatherology has discovered a measurement of consumer desire; we call it the Feel Good Factor (FGF) as it is a very good reflection of how a consumer feels and ultimately how they behave.

The background to this discovery is based on a basic understanding of human psychology. The absolute basic needs of a human are Heat, Light & Water (Weather), without any of these, humans would not be able to live.    Changes in the balance of Heat, Light and Water (Weather), changes the balance of chemicals in your brain and how it reacts. These changes then affect how your body works. These changes affect your moods and feelings and create desires and cravings that are never the same one day to the next. The balance of Heat, Light and Water (Weather) is the underlying driver of all human activity, but most of the time you don’t know the effect it’s having on you. The effect is so primitive that most of the time you react to the changes subconsciously.

As a consumer, and like every other consumer, these subconscious decisions affect what you eat & drink, what clothes you wear and almost everything else you buy and in what quantity you purchase them.

Until now these subconscious decisions have not been fully acknowledged. If the cause of an action cannot be recognised, predicting the effect cannot be forecast.

If industry had the potential to forecast consumer desire more accurately it would significantly reduce the amount of waste.
